Best Gym in Mineral Wells – Your Best Choice
December 3, 2025The Best Gym in Mineral Wells, TX: How to Choose the Right One for You
Mineral Wells has more fitness options than most people expect for a town its size: 24-hour weight rooms, city facilities, group fitness classes and martial arts schools. The “best gym in Mineral Wells” depends on what you want out of it, so here’s a straightforward way to compare them.
What to look for in a Mineral Wells gym
- Will you actually go? The best gym is the one you keep showing up to. Schedules, coaching and community matter more than equipment lists.
- Coaching vs. self-guided. Weight rooms are great if you already know what to do. Coached classes are better if you want structure and someone to check your form.
- Hours that fit your life. Early-morning, lunch and evening options make it easier to stay consistent.
- A trial before you commit. Any gym worth joining will let you try it first.
The main types of gyms in town
24-hour gyms
Good for lifting and cardio on your own schedule. The trade-off is that you’re mostly on your own, and motivation can fade without a coach or training partners.
City and community facilities
Affordable and convenient for basic workouts, walking tracks and general fitness, with fewer coached programs.
Group fitness and martial arts
Coached classes give you a plan every time you walk in. Martial arts adds something a treadmill can’t: a skill you get measurably better at, which is a big reason people stick with it.
Why Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu works as a “gym”
At Heart & Dagger BJJ, every class is a full-body workout built around learning. You warm up, drill technique with a partner, then put it to work in live, controlled training. You build grip and core strength, cardio and flexibility, and you also learn real self-defense. Because you’re solving problems with a partner instead of counting reps, the hour goes fast.
- Beginner-friendly: dedicated beginner adult classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday evenings.
- Early, midday and evening options: 5:30 AM classes Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, noon classes Tuesday through Saturday, and evening classes Monday through Friday.
- Family schedule: kids and adult classes run back to back, so parents and kids can train the same evening.
- Community: training partners learn your name and notice when you miss a week, which keeps you accountable.
Do I need to get in shape first?
No. Most members started out of shape, and classes scale to your level. Read Should I get into shape before trying martial arts? and 3 things to expect in your first class.

Mineral Wells is famous for its stunning natural scenery, providing ample opportunities for outdoor activities that feel worlds away from the DFW hustle—yet it’s only 50 miles west of Fort Worth.
Lake Mineral Wells State Park A jewel of the area, Lake Mineral Wells State Park is perfect for anyone who loves the outdoors. The park’s 12+ miles of trails, including the challenging primitive trail system, attract hikers, trail runners, and mountain bikers year-round. Rock climbers from Dallas-Fort Worth, Weatherford, and even Abilene make the drive for Penitentiary Hollow’s sandstone walls. Kayak and paddleboard rentals are affordable, and the fishing is legitimately good—Texas Parks & Wildlife regularly stocks the lake.
Mineral Wells Fossil Park This completely free, 100% public fossil-hunting site is one of only a handful in Texas where you’re allowed to keep what you find. On weekends you’ll see entire families spread out with buckets and screens, unearthing perfectly preserved Pennsylvanian-era sea life. It’s an unbeatable (and air-conditioned-free) field trip for homeschool groups and birthday parties.
Clark Gardens Botanical Park Spring bluebonnets, summer roses, and fall festivals make Clark Gardens a photographer’s dream. The model train exhibit and seasonal butterfly house keep younger kids entertained while parents relax by the waterfalls.

I’m 40. Is Jiu Jitsu Right for Me?
November 29, 2025I’m 40 years old. Why Would I do Jiu Jitsu?
This is a valid question and, as a 40 year old man that has been training Jiu Jitsu of half of that time, I just might have some insight to that.
I’m Constantly Around Successful People
Not just in the martial art but in all areas of their life. I’ve trained with Fortune 500 CEO’s, oil rig red necks and thousands of people in between. If I’ve learned anything about anything it’s that successful people all demonstrate the same things on and off of the mat. The discipline it takes to become a working millionaire is the same discipline it takes to become good at BJJ.
I get to learn things from these folks that I’d never know if I didn’t train at forty years old. I’ve made connections that have bettered my family, my attitude and my life that have contributed to my overall success.
The thing is; being successful in those areas don’t challenge you in the ways that a man at that age and stature needs.
Doing the Hard Thing
I’ve made a live where it doesn’t have to be hard. I’ve worked my butt off to put my family and myself in a position that we don’t have to worry about our next meal or anything else other than that high ass water bill. I can sit my ass on the couch, drink a cold one and watch as the kids wreck the living room for the 3rd time that day if I wanted to and some days, I do.
That’s exactly why I train BJJ in Mineral Wells. I’m required to find solutions to physical problems IMMEDIATELY! I don’t have time to worry about the small stresses of life at that moment.
IT’S THAT MOMENT.
The one where my mind is clear and I’m not thinking about the future problems that work, or myself has made for myself. It’s not that I’m avoiding the problem. I’m clearing space. If you’re old enough, I’m de-fraging my hard drive and clearing space so that I can handle tomorrow’s issues with a clean slate and a calm mind.
Damage Control
Training Jiu Jitsu keeps me cool in tough times. I’m not angry anymore and I can’t remember the last time I blew up on anyone. I attribute that to daily training and making a skill sharp and dangerous.
What’s the saying, “Better to be a warrior in a garden that a gardener in a war?” Having the peace of mind that I’m capable of protecting myself or my family is one of the most freeing feelings that a man can have. You don’t worry yourself with silly games of bravado because you know who really carries the big stick. Because you test yourself EVERY DAMN DAY.
After a night of hard training with the boys, you’ll wish you would have started sooner. You’ll be sore, feel beat up some days, exhausted and you’ll freaking love it because you’re finally working on you.
We sacrifice so much for our loved ones and family. If you don’t take the time to work on yourself you’ll find that your house was built on sand and as the foundation fails, so will the house suffer.
Do the work men!
