3 Ways to Stay on Your Diet For More Than a Few Days
IT’S HARD STAYING ON A DIET!
I remember reading a Garfield the Cat comic as a kid around the age of ten. Garfield is walking alone in the short, 3-frame, Sunday Comic. He thinks to himself, “I’m on a diet, no BIG DEAL” and comes to the realization that the word ‘Diet’ is just ‘Die’ with a ‘T’!
There cannot be a bigger agreement! Starting and sticking to a Diet SUCKS!
Have you started a Diet only to crash and burn into a delicious Cinnabon coma on day 4?
The number one reason this happens to anyone is that they quit EVERYTHING. Cold Turkey. It just doesn’t work well that way for the majority of people. When you’re training hard on the mats at Crazy BJJ, the last thing you need is your Diet derailing because you went nuclear on yourself from day one.
IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE WILLPOWER TO QUIT SODA, CANDY, FAST FOOD, BREAD, AIR, WHATEVER, CHECK THIS OUT.
3 WAYS TO STAY ON YOUR DIET FOR MORE THAN A FEW DAYS
There is no magic wand to losing weight or getting that jiu-jitsu body you want. You have to set yourself up for SUCCESS and be held accountable—especially when rolls get tough and life gets busy!
Smaller Plates Cutting your portion of each meal is the fastest way to cut caloric intake while staying sane on any Diet. But, it’s not always that easy. Your regular dinner plate looks so empty. That 4oz of chicken breast or whatever else you’re torturing yourself with looks WAAAY smaller with all that extra room. Get smaller plates. This will “trick” your eyes into seeing more food than there really is because the plate is crowded again! Your brain registers satisfaction faster, and you’ll actually enjoy the Diet instead of dreading every meal.
Cut Out Bad Habits One At a Time Instead of throwing everything in your pantry away at one time, kill those bad habits SLOWLY over time. If you make a smaller list and cross those things off until it’s complete, you’ll experience a small sense of accomplishment and your body won’t flip out on you with PizzaHut cravings at 2:30am or a midnight meeting with Ben & Jerry. Those small wins—like knocking sodas out for 2 weeks, THEN adding something else on top of that for another two weeks—will build confidence in your ability to stick to the Diet long-term and keep showing up strong at Crazy BJJ.
Have a Real Accountability Group There is something to say about having a group of people who really care about your success. If you’re going to a regular 24-hour gym, it may be difficult to get the affirmation, motivation, or support you need for continued success on your Diet or training. I’ve often heard it said, “People want to see you do well just not better than them,” and sadly, this is the case sometimes! Having a small, like-minded crew and knowledgeable coaches at Crazy BJJ (the kind good martial arts coaches should be) to push you through the “I don’t wanna’s” can be invaluable. They’ll notice when you’re slacking on the Diet, celebrate the wins with you, and keep you rolling even on the rough days.
