Which Martial Arts Classes Are Best for Self Defense?
December 12, 2025Which Martial Arts Classes Are Best for Self Defense?
If you’re looking for real-world self-defense that actually works when some dirtbag picks you as a target, the best bjj mineral wells classes at Crazy BJJ need to be at the very top of your list—no debate.
There are many reasons people seek out martial arts training. For some, it’s getting shredded or chasing belts. For a whole lot of others (especially women, parents, and everyday folks who just want to get home safe), the main reason is straight-up self-defense.
A question we hear every single week at Crazy BJJ is this:
What is the best martial art for self-defense?
Look, there’s no fairy-tale “one perfect art,” but after training and teaching for years, I’ll tell you exactly what works when the adrenaline dumps and it’s go-time on the street.
USING MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING TO WARD OFF AN ATTACKER
Most people walking into our bjj mineral wells program have zero interest in being the tough guy—they just never want to feel helpless again. They want tools that work against bigger, stronger, meaner attackers. That’s exactly what we deliver.
THE BEST MARTIAL ARTS FOR SELF DEFENSE
(Real talk from someone who’s pressure-tested all of them)
Taekwondo
Great kicks, flashy, and looks cool in movies. Awesome for keeping distance, but the second the fight closes or goes to the ground (which it almost always does), you’re in trouble.
Karate
Kyokushin and Goju-Ryu hit hard and build tough bodies. Linear punches and kicks are solid, but again—most real fights end up in a clinch or on the concrete.
Judo
Throws are beautiful and can end things quick, but if you don’t finish it fast, you’re on the ground with a guy who probably doesn’t follow rules.
Muay Thai
The “art of eight limbs” is nasty standing up. Elbows, knees, and clinch work are brutal—until someone tackles you and now you’re on your back with no idea what to do.
Krav Maga
Dirty, aggressive, and designed for the street. It’s fantastic for the first 10 seconds… but if you don’t drop the guy instantly, most Krav schools barely train the ground game where 95% of real fights end up.
Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)
Covers striking, clinch, and some ground. Sport rules still limit a lot of the dirty stuff you might actually need.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) – The Real Answer
Here’s the truth nobody wants to admit until they’ve been choked out by a 130-lb girl: once the fight hits the ground (and it almost always does), bjj mineral wells at Crazy BJJ is the single most effective system on the planet. You learn to neutralize size, strength, and aggression using leverage, control, and submissions. You can be 5’2” and 110 lbs and still make a 6’4” attacker tap or nap—every single class.
We pressure-test everything live, every night. No compliant partners, no fake scenarios—just real rolling with resisting humans. That’s why cops, military, bouncers, and everyday moms all end up on our mats.
If you want pretty, go somewhere else.
If you want to walk in peace knowing you can handle whatever comes at you, come train bjj mineral wells at Crazy BJJ, 2611 HWY 180 West, Mineral Wells, Texas 76067.
We’ll prove it to you on day one—first class is always free. See you on the mats.
Discipline, Children and Martial Arts Training
December 12, 2025Discipline, Children and Martial Arts Training
If you’re tired of yelling about homework, chores, or screen time, getting your kid into bjj mineral wells at Crazy BJJ is the secret weapon that turns chaos into champions—seriously, it’s a game-changer.
Martial arts classes can do a lot for your child. Children who study the martial arts learn key skills that will help them throughout their lives. One of the most important things they learn is discipline.
Discipline is a skill that can help kids face challenges that arise at any stage of life. Martial arts teaches that discipline is the key to success in any endeavor. Here’s what you need to know about discipline, your child, and the martial arts—especially in our bjj mineral wells program where kids actually want to show up.
How Do Martial Arts Classes Teach Discipline?
Let’s start with the basics. In any martial arts class, discipline is essential. To master any movement, a student must have enough discipline to heed their teacher’s instructions, copy their movements, and repeat the movement until they have mastered it.
Without focus and discipline, earning a new belt would be impossible. A martial arts class is a group setting but children are tested on their individual progress. It requires discipline to control behavior, emotions, and movements.
The topic of discipline is one that might not be enticing to most kids, but the benefit of learning about it in our bjj mineral wells classes is that they get to apply discipline to something they want to do. If they want to develop the skills necessary to do cool things like breaking a board, escaping a tough hold, or tapping out a bigger opponent, they must apply discipline.
In our bjj mineral wells sessions, we make it fun—think games like king of the hill where they have to stay focused for 30 seconds straight. Kids don’t even realize they’re building discipline because they’re too busy laughing and high-fiving. But trust me, that focus sticks. Parents tell me their kids come home and actually finish their math homework without a fight. It’s wild.
The Benefits of Discipline for Your Child
Young kids often struggle with self-control. They may not move with confidence or respect the people around them. Such behavior is normal in early childhood development and it illustrates the need for training and support. In our martial arts classes at Crazy BJJ, we meet kids where they are developmentally. As they learn the five tenets of martial arts, they will learn the importance of self-control, self-discipline, and mutual respect.
Let’s look at the ways that learning discipline in our bjj mineral wells classes can help your child.
• School Success: When your child goes to school, discipline is what will help them pay attention in class, ignore distractions, and get their school assignments done on time. No more last-minute panic or forgotten books—our kids show up prepared because they’ve drilled that habit on the mats.
• Family Harmony: Within your family, discipline is what will allow your child to fulfill their household obligations, getting chores done on time and being a good family citizen. Imagine a kid who doesn’t argue about taking out the trash because they know it’s just like drilling a technique—do it right, do it now.
• Confidence Boost: As discipline increases, so do self-confidence and respect. To behave with discipline is to behave with dignity and treat others with courtesy – and that means your child will be welcome wherever they go. Bullies? They back off when they see that quiet confidence.
• Goal-Crushing Power: In school and beyond, discipline is something that will help your child achieve their short-term and long-term goals. Whether their goal is to graduate at the top of their class, get into a top college, excel at a trade, or compete in sports, a disciplined child is far more likely to succeed than a child who never learned discipline.
• Lifelong Improvement: Discipline is the key to self-improvement. As your child prepares for belt testing, they’ll be learning the benefits of discipline and perseverance, both of which can help them attain their goals in life. We’ve seen kids go from barely tying their shoes to submitting adults in under a year—all because they learned to stick with it.
Your child’s instructor will begin teaching your child about discipline from the moment they step into their first martial arts class. We find that the kids in our bjj mineral wells programs look up to their instructors — and one reason that they do is because they can see for themselves the way that discipline can help them on their journey.
Whether your child chooses to continue martial arts training into adulthood or not, learning self-control and self-discipline as a child will help them at every stage of life. We believe that martial arts instruction teaches kids to be good students, good citizens, and good people. Discipline plays an important role in those lessons.
And here’s the best part: at Crazy BJJ, 2611 HWY 180 West, Mineral Wells, Texas 76067, we make discipline feel like an adventure, not a chore. Your kid will beg to come back, and you’ll see the changes in days. Don’t wait—sign them up today and watch them thrive. The mats are ready!
6 Benefits of Martial Arts for Teenagers
December 12, 20256 Benefits of Martial Arts for Teenagers
If you’ve got a teenager who’s glued to their phone, moody as hell, or just drifting through life, getting them into bjj mineral wells at Crazy BJJ is the single best move you can make this year—hands down.
Martial arts training can benefit people of all ages, from young children to adults. Whether they want to learn self-defense, shut down a bully, or work toward a black belt, stepping onto the mats at our bjj mineral wells program will change them both in school and at home.
With that in mind, here are 6 martial arts benefits for teenagers that every parent in Mineral Wells needs to know about.
#1: Self-Esteem The teenage years are brutal. Social media, drama, hormones—everything is designed to wreck a kid’s confidence. Our bjj mineral wells classes flip that script. Every time they nail a new technique, survive a tough roll, or earn a stripe, they prove to themselves they’re capable of hard things. That quiet, real confidence starts showing up everywhere—better posture, eye contact, and zero tolerance for anyone talking down to them.
#2: Mental Health Teen anxiety and depression are at all-time highs. Training bjj mineral wells style gives them an outlet that actually works. The mats force them to be present—no room for overthinking when someone’s trying to choke you out. Plus, the endorphin rush from a hard roll beats any pill or TikTok scroll. Parents tell me all the time their kid sleeps better, argues less, and actually smiles again after starting at Crazy BJJ.
#3: Self-Control Phones, attitudes, hormones—teens are walking impulse bombs. In bjj mineral wells, they learn that one emotional explosion on the mat gets them smashed every single time. They figure out real quick that staying calm and thinking three moves ahead wins the day. That self-control starts bleeding into homework, arguments with you, and every other part of life.
#4: Discipline Discipline isn’t punishment—it’s doing what needs to be done even when you don’t want to. Showing up to bjj mineral wells when it’s cold, when they’re tired, when Fortnite is calling—that’s discipline in action. Drilling the same sweep fifty times until it’s perfect? That’s discipline. And once they taste the results, they start applying it to grades, chores, and long-term goals.
#5: Resilience Getting submitted 20 times in one night sucks. But getting up, slapping hands, and going again builds something nothing else can touch. Teens in our bjj mineral wells program learn that failing is just data. They stop quitting when things get hard because they’ve already survived worse on the mats. That grit carries them through breakups, bad grades, and every curveball life throws later.
#6: Physical Fitness Sitting in class all day then scrolling for hours is killing teen bodies. One hour of bjj mineral wells torches more calories than any treadmill ever will, builds real-world strength, and makes them move like athletes again. No more dad-bod at 16. They leave dripping sweat, exhausted, and addicted to feeling strong.
Bottom line: the teenager who walks into Crazy BJJ at 2611 HWY 180 West, Mineral Wells, Texas 76067 is not the same kid who walks out six months later—guaranteed. The lessons they learn rolling with us stick for life. Get them on the mat before another year slips by. Your future self (and their future self) will thank you.
3 Reasons Kids Should Train Martial Arts
December 12, 20253 REASONS KIDS SHOULD TRAIN BJJ CLASSES MINERAL WELLS
Parents are always asking what the best activity is for their kid, and the second they walk into our bjj classes mineral wells at Crazy BJJ, they instantly see why it’s a game-changer. Here are my personal top 3 reasons my own kids roll every single week!
✅ RESPECT Not just the fake “yes sir/no sir” stuff, but REAL respect—for coaches, training partners, and most importantly, themselves. In our bjj classes mineral wells, kids bow in, shake every single hand on the mat, and learn that respect is earned by showing up and giving effort—even when they don’t feel like it. That carries over to teachers, parents, and everyone else in their life. I’ve watched shy kids turn into young men and women who look adults in the eye and speak with zero fear.
✅ CONFIDENCE Traditional sports are awesome, but you’re only as good as the team lets you be. In bjj classes mineral wells, every stripe, every belt, every time they escape bottom mount is 100% on them. Nobody can carry them and nobody can blame the loss on someone else. That individual achievement builds a different kind of swagger—the kind that doesn’t need to brag because it’s real. My daughter used to hide behind my leg at birthday parties; now she’s the one teaching the new kids how to shrimp across the mat.
✅ FUN Let’s be honest—finding a physical activity kids actually beg to do is like finding a unicorn these days. Our bjj classes mineral wells are basically recess with superpowers. They’re laughing, rolling, playing shark tank and guard tag, burning energy like crazy, and learning life-saving skills without even realizing it. No iPads, no screens—just high-fives, sweat, and the biggest smiles when they finally hit that armbar on coach.
Kids who train in solid bjj classes mineral wells show up to school with better focus, better grades, and way better manners. They listen the first time, they handle losing without melting down, and they learn that hard work actually pays off. I see it every single day at Crazy BJJ.
I kick myself all the time thinking about what my life would look like if I had started as a kid instead of waiting until adulthood. Don’t make my mistake—get your kid on the mat now.
The bjj classes mineral wells at Crazy BJJ, 2611 HWY 180 West, Mineral Wells, Texas 76067, are built for kids of all ages and experience levels. We’ve got the best kids program in the area because we keep it fun, safe, and life-changing.

BJJ MINERAL WELLS – Why Kid’s Don’t Fight Back?
December 12, 2025Finding real bjj mineral wells training changes everything when it comes to bullying, and here’s the hard truth most parents never hear.
A huge majority of people have had a bully in their lifetime. Why didn’t they fight back when they had the chance? While I think there are many, many reasons people—kids mostly—don’t fight back when they are experiencing bullying in their life, I believe there are THREE core reasons why kids don’t fight back when they are being bullied.
Here I will list these reasons and also how getting your kid into solid bjj mineral wells classes can give them the confidence to finally take control of their feelings and their life.
There are 3 major reasons that kids don’t fight back.
#1 – THEY DON’T KNOW HOW!
The amount of adults that have walked through life without a physical altercation is astonishing. I speak with parents every week looking for bjj mineral wells because they finally realize they have ZERO clue what to do in a real fight—and neither do their kids. The fact is, most PARENTS don’t have the skills necessary to teach their children to defend themselves. My own Dad told me, “Son, just one good punch in the nose will end it.” MY DAD WAS DEAD WRONG! 😅 Getting your child into bjj mineral wells under a qualified instructor stops the embarrassment and pain before it even starts.
#2 – “That kid just needs to toughen up”
This phrase drives me NUTS! I see it all over the internet every time a bullying story hits the news. News flash—not everyone is born tough. In fact, almost nobody is. Toughness is built through controlled hardship. If you want your kid mentally and physically stronger, put them in an environment that pushes them the right way. Training bjj mineral wells style does exactly that—kids mature fast on the mats, facing discomfort daily in a safe, supportive room.
#3 – Their parents never taught them how to deal with pressure!
This one is HUGE! When I ask students who’ve been bullied why they didn’t react, the answer is almost always, “I just froze.” That freeze is anxiety about the unknown. When kids train consistently at a legit bjj mineral wells program, they’ve already been in hundreds of uncomfortable positions—they don’t freeze anymore because they’ve been there before. Preparation kills panic.
BONUS – They are afraid they will get into trouble.
We don’t raise reckless fighters. We teach “verbal jiu-jitsu” first—how to shut a bully down with words and confidence. If that fails, they know every non-physical option was used, which makes explaining things to teachers or principals a whole lot easier.
Make your kids do hard stuff—like showing up to bjj mineral wells at Crazy BJJ, 2611 HWY 180 West, Mineral Wells, Texas 76067. They’ll whine, they’ll complain, they’ll try to quit… but they’ll thank you later when they walk taller, talk stronger, and never have to be anyone’s victim again.
Should I get into Shape Before Trying Martial Arts
December 12, 2025SHOULD I GET INTO SHAPE BEFORE TRYING MARTIAL ARTS?
SO YOU DECIDED THAT YOU WANT TO BE A NINJA? I GOTTA TELL YOU, GREAT DECISION!
Look, starting martial arts is one of the smartest moves you can make, no matter where you’re at right now.
I know, when I was a kid the ONLY thing I wanted to be when I grew up was a Ninja! This was the late eighties and early nineties when Jean Claude Van Damme was a Hollywood mega-star, Ninja Turtles ruled Saturday mornings, and 3 Ninjas was on everyone’s Blockbuster rental list.
It didn’t matter what you looked like or how far you could run – it just mattered that you were a ninja, having a blast with your friends and being whoever you wanted to be in that moment.
Now in my 30s I still watch those awesome martial arts movies, except I don’t have to pretend anymore. I get to do real martial arts stuff every single day – IN REAL LIFE! This time it’s about living a healthy, active life, crushing stress, and feeling like a badass while doing it.
LET’S BE REALISTIC HERE.
You probably don’t have the same energy you did as a teenager, and you definitely don’t move the same. (Trust me, I feel it too.) But that doesn’t mean you can’t jump into martial arts and start building a stronger, leaner, happier version of yourself.
Here’s the truth: there are effective martial arts that embrace every body type – big, small, tall, wide, whatever. The mats don’t judge.
SHOULD I GET INTO SHAPE BEFORE TRYING MARTIAL ARTS?
If you’ve asked yourself this, it’s not a dumb question – I get it all the time. The answer is simple: NO.
The best martial arts academies (like ours) have true beginner classes where you learn the exact movements you need, build real fitness from zero, and level up safely. That’s where the magic happens.
FOR REAL – WANT PROOF? One of our students dropped 100 lbs in under a year just by showing up and training consistently. No crazy prep, no “get in shape first” nonsense – just started.
Some martial arts torch insane calories – we’ve tracked students burning over 1,400 calories in a single two-hour class. And yeah, that was a 37-year-old dad who walked in on day one out of breath after tying his shoes.
You don’t need to be in shape to start martial arts. You just need to start. Stay consistent, trust the process, and watch your body and confidence transform faster than you think.
Crazy BJJ is 100% dedicated to this kind of progress for every beginner who walks through the door at 2611 HWY 180 West, Mineral Wells, Texas 76067. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and our martial arts programs are built for ANY body type – come prove it to yourself. The mats are waiting.
3 Ways to Stay on Your Diet For More Than a Few Days
December 12, 20253 Ways to Stay on Your Diet For More Than a Few Days
IT’S HARD STAYING ON A DIET!
I remember reading a Garfield the Cat comic as a kid around the age of ten. Garfield is walking alone in the short, 3-frame, Sunday Comic. He thinks to himself, “I’m on a diet, no BIG DEAL” and comes to the realization that the word ‘Diet’ is just ‘Die’ with a ‘T’!
There cannot be a bigger agreement! Starting and sticking to a Diet SUCKS!
Have you started a Diet only to crash and burn into a delicious Cinnabon coma on day 4?
The number one reason this happens to anyone is that they quit EVERYTHING. Cold Turkey. It just doesn’t work well that way for the majority of people. When you’re training hard on the mats at Crazy BJJ, the last thing you need is your Diet derailing because you went nuclear on yourself from day one.
IF YOU DON’T HAVE THE WILLPOWER TO QUIT SODA, CANDY, FAST FOOD, BREAD, AIR, WHATEVER, CHECK THIS OUT.
3 WAYS TO STAY ON YOUR DIET FOR MORE THAN A FEW DAYS
There is no magic wand to losing weight or getting that jiu-jitsu body you want. You have to set yourself up for SUCCESS and be held accountable—especially when rolls get tough and life gets busy!
Smaller Plates Cutting your portion of each meal is the fastest way to cut caloric intake while staying sane on any Diet. But, it’s not always that easy. Your regular dinner plate looks so empty. That 4oz of chicken breast or whatever else you’re torturing yourself with looks WAAAY smaller with all that extra room. Get smaller plates. This will “trick” your eyes into seeing more food than there really is because the plate is crowded again! Your brain registers satisfaction faster, and you’ll actually enjoy the Diet instead of dreading every meal.
Cut Out Bad Habits One At a Time Instead of throwing everything in your pantry away at one time, kill those bad habits SLOWLY over time. If you make a smaller list and cross those things off until it’s complete, you’ll experience a small sense of accomplishment and your body won’t flip out on you with PizzaHut cravings at 2:30am or a midnight meeting with Ben & Jerry. Those small wins—like knocking sodas out for 2 weeks, THEN adding something else on top of that for another two weeks—will build confidence in your ability to stick to the Diet long-term and keep showing up strong at Crazy BJJ.
Have a Real Accountability Group There is something to say about having a group of people who really care about your success. If you’re going to a regular 24-hour gym, it may be difficult to get the affirmation, motivation, or support you need for continued success on your Diet or training. I’ve often heard it said, “People want to see you do well just not better than them,” and sadly, this is the case sometimes! Having a small, like-minded crew and knowledgeable coaches at Crazy BJJ (the kind good martial arts coaches should be) to push you through the “I don’t wanna’s” can be invaluable. They’ll notice when you’re slacking on the Diet, celebrate the wins with you, and keep you rolling even on the rough days.
NEED SOME HELP STAYING ACTIVE OR ACCOUNTABLE? Come train with us at Crazy BJJ — 2611 HWY 180 West, Mineral Wells, Texas 76067. We’ll keep you moving, hold you to your goals, and make sure your Diet doesn’t die with a “T” after just a few days. See you on the mats!
