I’m 40. Is Jiu Jitsu Right for Me?

November 29, 2025

I’m 40 years old. Why Would I do Jiu Jitsu?

This is a valid question and, as a 40 year old man that has been training Jiu Jitsu of half of that time, I just might have some insight to that.

I’m Constantly Around Successful People

Not just in the martial art but in all areas of their life. I’ve trained with Fortune 500 CEO’s, oil rig red necks and thousands of people in between. If I’ve learned anything about anything it’s that successful people all demonstrate the same things on and off of the mat. The discipline it takes to become a working millionaire is the same discipline it takes to become good at BJJ.

I get to learn things from these folks that I’d never know if I didn’t train at forty years old. I’ve made connections that have bettered my family, my attitude and my life that have contributed to my overall success.

The thing is; being successful in those areas don’t challenge you in the ways that a man at that age and stature needs.

Doing the Hard Thing

I’ve made a live where it doesn’t have to be hard. I’ve worked my butt off to put my family and myself in a position that we don’t have to worry about our next meal or anything else other than that high ass water bill. I can sit my ass on the couch, drink a cold one and watch as the kids wreck the living room for the 3rd time that day if I wanted to and some days, I do.

That’s exactly why I train BJJ in Mineral Wells. I’m required to find solutions to physical problems IMMEDIATELY! I don’t have time to worry about the small stresses of life at that moment.

IT’S THAT MOMENT.

The one where my mind is clear and I’m not thinking about the future problems that work, or myself has made for myself. It’s not that I’m avoiding the problem. I’m clearing space. If you’re old enough, I’m de-fraging my hard drive and clearing space so that I can handle tomorrow’s issues with a clean slate and a calm mind.

Damage Control

Training Jiu Jitsu keeps me cool in tough times. I’m not angry anymore and I can’t remember the last time I blew up on anyone. I attribute that to daily training and making a skill sharp and dangerous.

What’s the saying, “Better to be a warrior in a garden that a gardener in a war?” Having the peace of mind that I’m capable of protecting myself or my family is one of the most freeing feelings that a man can have. You don’t worry yourself with silly games of bravado because you know who really carries the big stick. Because you test yourself EVERY DAMN DAY.

After a night of hard training with the boys, you’ll wish you would have started sooner. You’ll be sore, feel beat up some days, exhausted and you’ll freaking love it because you’re finally working on you.

We sacrifice so much for our loved ones and family. If you don’t take the time to work on yourself you’ll find that your house was built on sand and as the foundation fails, so will the house suffer.

Do the work men!
